2007.07.22.mt - according to this, taking a US mobile phone into Japan doesn't seem feasible

2007.06.13.es - re: navigation device - i love them.  i've wanted one for a long time.  want to decide by the end of august.  would want to get used to working it and having it.  but you've got that excellent map, so don't think it's crucial.  but still on my mind.

2007.06.13.es - re:gear/art project:  for a minute thought "hey, i'll use my canon powershot (tiny) and audio recorder gizmo (tiny)" instead of video camera - but realized, both rely on a [laptop?] to have some way to store the stuff - memory on both fills up quickly, especially video clips on the powershot, and the audio thingy doesn't even have replaceable memory, i don't think.  maybe somebody makes a small, light, portable large-capacity hard drive which can be connected directly to the camera and the interface can either be the camera or that fantasy device, but don't think i've ever heard of that.  will look into it.  good news = ordered that waterproof sony camcorder case yesterday, amazon user reviews are overwhelmingly positive.  also another company makes a freeform one, more like a pouch, which presumably would have space in it for an intervalometer.  that would be awesome, will need to test this and see if battery holds up, but say shooting three seconds every minute, all day long, hold on, never mind, that would get really frustrating.  a frame per second, don't see how that would lessen camera battery load.  what i'm getting at here, or trying to, is it would be nice to load a fresh [tape] [memory card] and battery in the morning, then not fiddle with taking something out of a waterproof case until we stopped at the end of the day, indoors.  maybe i need to check out a surveillance shop and shell out some big bucks.  they've got to have something really long-working right?  i don't care much about pixelization or quality, no hd for me, just get the stuff so we have a record of what we saw.  the degradation or graininess or whatever you want to call it, that would be a bonus, i think.  frankly would probably speed [editing/programming/whatever the end-use of recording/images/footage/audio/video] will be.

2007.06.13.mt - i've had another tinker with the schedule. i wanted to lighten our load at the start, and give us another stop along lake biwa, so i've arranged a stop at omihachiman. mark (brother) and i went for a lovely bike ride there a couple of years ago. we hired bikes from next to the station and rode past canals to the lake. but of course this would infringe your arbitrary "no wheeled transportation" rule. also i want to see hikone castle.

2007.06.13.es - great.  really, really want to take a full month (includes flights).  rest days welcome.  you can bike if you want some alone time, don't want to inflict my dogma on you.

2007.06.10.mt - i've rejigged the dates to include two rest days: one in gifu (kano) and one in shimo-suwa

2007.06.12.es - awesome.  thanks.  onsen right?

2007.06.08.mt - yup, i'm all up for a couple of rest days. maybe we could take one at gifu (kano) and pop into nagoya to see hitomi? and then one at shimo-suwa (onsen town).

2007.06.12.es - hitomi can pop out to wherever and see us!  she loves onsen!  and travel!  you just miss nagoya, don't you.  seriously, somehow feel it would screw with our art project to take a train or head anywhere not exactly on our route.  know what i mean?  let's say from start to finish (excluding of course wacky emergency scenarios) we board no form of wheeled or motorized transportation.  then, after we get to tokyo, and we're done, sure, we can take the subway to the hotel or wherever.

2007.06.06.es - good news, the big boss has agreed to let the other big boss work out how much time off i can take at one chunk.  believe that makes a full month likely more possible.  imagine tomorrow or friday we'll sit down and hopefully resolve it.

2007.06.12.es - time off update.  decided to wait for next week, but told him this week that would want to talk with him next week about it.

two phones would be nice. it's a cost-benefit question i guess.

2007.04.27.es - chafing update:  friend (pretty active cyclist/sailor etc.) recommends astroglide.  think i have some silicone lube, will try that next pack-loaded walk.  thanks for keeping your blog, love being educated daily.

2007.06.21.es - my cellphone salesman said no usa cellphones will work in japan, japan has its own protocols/whatever

2007.06.13.es - re: cellphone - i've decided to switch providers and get a new cellphone.  what this means is it's entirely possible i'll be able to buy one which could conceivably work in japan.  will need to do a bit of research, but if that's an option, i'll go for it.

2007.04.29.es - on or by june 1st both erik and matthew will walk 39 kilometers on one day, and time that walk.

2007.05.18es - !!! just noticed, down lower on this page, there's a kind of pledge, that we'd clock our speed.  i must have added that during a skype session, to see if we could really do the 40 kilometers a day.  hoping can do it in less than 10 hours, so if we leave by 7:30am we can be arriving at a hotel around 5:30pm, only meal break would be lunch, probably morning and afternoon snacks, water breaks.  ok i have to figure out when i'm going to do that, didn't realize june 1st was so soon.  time flies.  i think maybe this sunday will be the day for me.  you might want an extension, your toe needs to heal up and then you need to start getting back in shape again, maybe think about a new date for you after your toe is in great shape.  talk to you sunday night.

2007.05.26mt - hey dude. can you create a new page called "vocabulary" or something. i want to make a list of japanese terms that will help make our journey even more fulfilling. i'll test you on them every week! (i could probably do it myself, but i don't want to break anything.)

2007.05.09.mt - i've changed the dates again so we have the rest day in shimo-suwa (hot springs resort by a lake) instead of karuizawa.

2007.05.18.es - awesome.  many thanks.

2007.05.06.mt - hey dude. you've been pretty quiet lately. anyway, i'm proposing we change our departure date from kyoto so we can catch the jidai matsuri, one of kyoto's three big festivals, on october 22. so how about we leave on october 23? here are a couple of links:

http://www.jnto.go.jp/eng/indepth/history/traditionalevents/a58_fes_jidai.html

http://www.konoha-house.com/nakasendo/n710sanjo.htm

i've also added some info on accommodation options to the dates page. i don't think there are onsen in karuizawa. but there definetely are in shimo-suwa.

2007.04.27.es - support two phones.  but you are welcome to use our one phone should you choose not to get one, totally ok.  and if you end up wanting to share that cost, i will not refuse accepting some payment, but will not urge or request that we share the cost.  so i will try to get a phone and if i run into trouble doing that, may request some technical assistance.  will contact john wells and see if i (we) can stay with him a night or two before heading out, and if can have things shipped to his place.  not even sure if he's in kyoto anymore.  my hair cutter's parents live outside of kyoto, as long as they're in japan that time period very sure they will be eager to provide that sort of assistance (signing for packages).

2007.04.28.mt - i'm pretty sure you can arrange to pick phones up at the airport when you arrive or have them deliverd to a hotel, so no need to seek assistance from friends. if we decide on only one, i'm perfectly happy paying half and helping with arranging it. as i said, i agree that having a cellphone is a great idea. just not sure about the need for two at this stage

maybe use yen, then we both know what we're talking about.

2007.04.27.es - oui oui Â¥ (alt+0165 on windows, not sure on mac, otherwise Y)

2007.04.28.mt - i'e moved the cellphone links to the link page

2007.04.26.es - second one looks cheaper.  looked into my heart and realized "i want a cellphone".  there are too many situations i can imagine wanting one - we can't find the inn, one of us is sick and takes a bus for two days, you get tired of me and want to leave at 5am and i leave at 7am so we have a day of walking in solitude, but you want to call to warn me about the dog off the leash just before the lotteria - anyway, if you want to share one that certainly will save us each Â¥_ or so, but if you want to share one, i want to be the designated keeper of the phone, prefer to each get them, even if we end up not using at all.

2007.04.27.mt - let's not use $ without specifying NZ or US. it's confusing.

2007.04.25.es - chafing.  issue to think about.  nathaniel, friend from hometown, ran a marathon, said spectators stand there with vaseline when runners go by, i asked why, he said chafing.  i have noticed when i walk significant distances with my pack, it rubs, i end up raw.  think in shikoku was just raw the whole time.  wonder if there's a better way - some kind of super-slippery-fabrig girdle thing to make it rub against that instead of hips?  have you noticed any problem with that yet?  have you walked with a pack strapped on yet?  something to think about and resolve by september

2007.04.25.mt - haven't experienced this, except when I started jogging. solved it by buying some teflon-coated shorts! haven't walked with pack yet

2007.04.27.mt - no, it doesn't need to be private. i'm just a private sort of guy. and it doesn't need to be public either

2007.04.26.mt - i've looked into this already. it's difficult to buy a cellphone these days if your not a resident. but there are plenty of places that rent them. we can organise to pick it up at the airport on arrival. i think it's a good idea. one between the two of us will be handy for calling hotels, etc. here are some companies that have been recommended on various travle forums. i haven't compared prices or anything yet:

2007.04.25.es - had thought maybe one thing we really want to do is one or two train or bus rides, a shinkansen ride from tokyo to kyoto, and/or a local train/bus ride?  maybe even round trip?  after spending two weeks to walk from point a to point b as bipedal organisms, using machine technology to traverse 330 miles in a few hours, could also become involved in our art project, could be really interesting, fun for us to sit there and watch past experiences whiz by - like when the tokaido line from tokyo to nagoya goes right by my old apartment building in numazu, i can glimpse it, and there's a flash of memories, lived there a year and a half, gets somehow jolt-distilled-imparted in seconds [maybe we want to work this into the timeline - maybe upon arrival in tokyo we hop on a shinkansen and do round-trip one day?]

2007.04.25.es - having a hard time with the cellphone dilemma.  think it's cheap to rent one or buy a disposable one for a few weeks?  think it's a good idea?  i like the idea of being able to make calls if we want to.  we could always turn them off (for days at a time) if we don't want to be distracted by incoming calls.  what do you think?

2007.04.26.mt - i'd like to come up with an "official" title for the project that we can both use here, on our blogs, and eleswhere. i've been calling it "the nakasendo walk/art project" by deflaut. maybe we could just call it the nakasendo project, or the kisokaido project? also, your use of the term "kisokaido line" is annoying me . it's not a line, it's a highway. so i suggest either "kisokaido highway" or, better still, plain "kisokaido". oh dear, why is that first line double-spaced? Ah, it's because I inserted the smiley face.

2007.04.25.es - matthew, propose we use this page as the place to post questions/answers to each other about unresolved things (particularly when they don't fall into one of the other page-categories); can strike through after the other has responded, and move to bottom; propose using YYYY.MM.DD.II format when post question or answer to give us an idea of how long a question has been sapping our concentration

2007.04.26.mt - sounds fine to me. dates will be confusing though given time difference, also not sure of the strike through/move to bottom routine. like should i strike through and move the your comments above now that i've rsponded? sorry, never used a wiki before, so unfamiliar with the protocol. what about coloring text to distinguish the poster?

2007.04.25.es - matthew, a few conventions feel quite strongly about sticking to, if you agree = 1) let's not delete anything.  just move to below double-horizontal line on each page ok?  and strike through if you're feeling really vehement about it and want to erase it, my stupid rule be damned.  but want a record of everything - why not?  could be interesting in 2017 when we're planning our moon trip.  2) the dating and initialling thing - ok not that important, but nice, somehow.  3) really want to keep this public.  why not?  for comments, let's see if anyone starts posting them to your blog, otherwise something we maybe don't need to worry about.  after all don't actually anticipate anyone will ever want to read this but you and me - it's our private stuff but no need to enforce privacy right?  let the world know i'm taking six pairs of sox with me, big deal.

2007.04.26.mt - 1) fine with not deleting 2) fine with dating and initialling. but what about colour (see above) 3) uncomfortable with keeping this public. i can imagine us talking about a lot of stuff that i'd like kept between you and me. plus we have the blogs as a public record

2007.04.25.es - try to get some sort of sponsorship - itoen, new balance, merrill, apple, canon, sony?  serious.  we want to do this and we're both willing to pay for it all.  what if apple gives us each a laptop if we agree to use their laptops while we make our work and they get to say "hey, erik and matthew used apple laptops when they walked from kyoto to tokyo doing this art project in 2007" whenever they want?  maybe this is a really bad idea but it might be worth someone's while to sponsor us?

2007.04.26.mt - hmm. as long as it doesn't entail compromising ANYTHING or undue public exposure, i guess it's ok. but it's not something i'm willing to put any time or energy into. bottom line: i'm not keen, but if you are then go ahead on your own. i don't want to turn this into a stunt

2007.04.26.mt - not sure about this. i'm keen on avoiding unnecessary costs/travel. i'm going to try and get an open jaw ticket (nz - osaka - narita - nz) to AVOID having to make the shinkansen trip. it's 13,000 yen one way

2007.04.26.es - color = makes sense; project name = kisokaido [the kisokaido project] [the 69 stations of the kisokaido]; privacy = this wiki is now private (not public, initially was public, have changed settings) (still don't think anything in here that needs to be private, we can always email each other sensitive information if it comes up, but honestly can't think of anything - medication maybe); move-to-bottom-protocal = i've never really used a wiki with another person before, just thought it would be interesting to keep a record of everything, but if not, we can start deleting - for time being, will just move to below double lines, hope you'll humor me in that

2007.04.26.es isn't this cool that we can both type on the same page?  think it will save time eventually.  really digging it right now.
